The transmission speed sensors are used to calculate the actual gear ratio of the transmission while in use. There are generally two speed sensors that work in conjunction to provide accurate data to the vehicle’s onboard computer. The first transmission speed sensor is known as the Input Shaft Speed (ISS) sensor.

Step 1 – Remove the old VSS. The VSS is located on the front passenger's side of the transfer case. Pull back on the metal clip as well as the black wire harness connector, and then pull it straight out. Figure 2. Pull back on metal clip. Use a 19mm wrench to loosen the VSS. Figure 3.
